Serial number-based dating and authentication guides are available for Gretsch, Ludwig and Ludwig Standard drums. Because the approach is serial number based, it only applies to Gretsch drums with serial numbers starting in about 1962, Ludwig main line drums with serial numbers starting in late 1963.
The Gretsch serial numbers now have a two letter prefix indicating the location of the production, followed by a two-digit year a two-digit month and a four-digit production number related to that specific plant. The serial number on your modern Gretsch guitar or bass contains specific information about where and when it was made. This allows you to accurately date a modern Gretsch guitar by its serial number. Early (sequential) serial numbers. Gretsch began numbering it`s guitars sequentially in 1939, beginning with the better models. They started, sensibly enough, at 001, just writing the number inside the back. After the war that method continued, but some guitars had the serial number embossed on the headstock. First published in November 2011, Rick Gier's Dating Vintage Gretsch Drums Based upon Serial Numbers: Challenging the Legend, Lore and Lies analyzed over 4,300 reports of vintage Gretsch drums with serial number labels. The paper looks at thirteen different characteristics of Gretsch drums from the 1962-1984 era.

I am interested in Gretsch banjos from the 1950's. It's a baby boomer thing, sorry. I bought this ebay Gretsch Orchestrella with a serial number (2307) stamped on the top of the peghead.

According to a Gretsch serial number list I got from a guitar website covering Gretsch serial numbers 1949-1965 serial numbers from 2000 - 3000 should be 1949-1950. Furthermore, this site said 'sometimes the serial number is impressed on the top edge of the peghead'. But this banjo looks like 1930's to me. Did Gretsch start a new numbering system right before or right after WWII? I know Gretsch started it's own B&D banjo numbering system in about 1940 shortly after Gretsch acquired Bacon & Day. I need some help here.
Thank you.

Well, I found out that serial numbers for Gretsch acoustic instruments changed in 1949 ('50 Years of Gretsch Electric Guitars' book) . Before that the Gretsch serial numbering system was haphazard. Therefore, did Gretsch stamp its serial numbers on the edge of the peghead before 1949? Help if you have or have seen a pre 1949 Gretsch with the serial number stamped on the edge of the headstock. If not maybe my 'new' Gretsch banjo was made in the 1950's altho I must admit that it doesn't look very 50's
Thank you.
